Cosmetic Dermatology

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photo-rejuvenation is used to treat a number of different skin conditions. At Clifton Hill Dermatology our skin therapists have been successfully treating Rosacea (redness), telangiectasia (broken capillaries) and pigmentation for many years with IPL.

IPL is similar to a laser in that it uses an intense beam of light but IPL can cover a larger body area with each pulse and is gentler on the skin. A powerful hand piece, with multiple settings, packs concentrated power into each pulse to treat varied skin types and conditions. The hand piece eliminates epidermal pigmented lesions by delivering a pulse of intense light, which passes harmlessly through the skin, and is absorbed by the lesion. The light heats the pigment and disables the cells that produced it. Mild crusting will appear approximately 24 hours after the treatment and these dead cells are naturally shed by the body after approximately 7-14 days, leaving behind fresh, more even toned skin. A mild sunburn sensation may be felt for a few hours immediately after the treatment. IPL can also be used as a general rejuvenation treatment for the skin. For IPL photo-rejuvenation on pigmentation we recommend between 1-3 treatments coming in at monthly intervals. For dermal or stubborn pigmentation we recommend treating with our fraxel dual laser.

Pulsed light also treats visible blood vessels, such as those caused by Rosacea by heating the haemoglobin within the vein. The absorption of the heat causes the veins to collapse and fade from view. Mild redness may occur for a few hours immediately after treatment, along with a mild sunburn sensation. We recommend patients come in for treatment between 2-4 weeks apart and anywhere from 3 or more treatments may be needed for broken vessels and rosacea.

All of these treatments are quick and relatively painless. Most patients describe the light pulses as a ‘snapping’ sensation, which causes mild discomfort at the most. After the treatment there may be some redness for a few days, which quickly fades revealing rejuvenated skin.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair reduction treatment works by emitting pulses of intense lamplight into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair and disables the follicular cells responsible for growing new hair. Most hair removed by the IPL will not grow back for months, whilst other hair may not grow back at all. The hair which does grow back may be thinner and lighter in colour. Blonde, grey hair or red hair will not respond with IPL, as there is no pigment in the hair follicle for the lamplight to attach to. Most patients usually need approximately 6 treatments and recommended to come in for monthly treatments. Some patients may have hormonal imbalances and therefore may need more treatments.

Any area of the body can be treated, except around the eyes. Underarms, back, bikini line, face and neck can all be treated.

After the initial preparation, a wand-like handpiece is placed over the skin. The handpiece emits the light which disables the hair follicle. Most people perceive the light as a gentle ‘snapping’ sensation.

You may experience some redness and mild tenderness in the area for a short time afterwards, but it does not interfere with normal day to day activities.

Most patients require a number of treatments to achieve optimal hair reduction results from IPL.

At Clifton Hill Dermatology we offer Fraxel re:store Dual Laser treatment for a complete skin rejuvenation of areas such as the face, neck, chest and hands. Fraxel Dual is a non-ablative fractional resurfacing laser treatment which creates thousands of microscopic columns of laser energy to penetrate the skin, stimulating the skin’s natural wound-healing response. Fractional lasers allow for effective treatment of skin with less downtime and less risk, as the laser treatment is performed over an entire area of concern but will only pick out a percentage of the skin to treat. This allows for faster healing time and a greater range of skin types to be treated, such as olive or darker skins with less risk of causing pigmentation problems, which conventional ablative lasers cannot treat. Most treatments cover between 20-40% of skin per session, depending on the patients skin problem and skin type, this means patients do require a number of sessions. The sessions are usually spaced four to six weeks apart. With the latest dual wavelength technology, 1550nm and 1927nm wavelengths, we have the option to treat higher into the skins layers for pigmentation or deeper into the dermis for problems such as acne scarring and textural improvement.

Fraxel® Dual laser treatment is proven to be effective for the treatment of the following skin problems:

  • Age spots and sunspots (pigmented lesions)
  • Melasma
  • Acne scars and surgical scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Skin resurfacing

A topical local anaesthetic is applied to the skin prior to the treatment for between 45 minutes to an hour. This assists in minimising any discomfort that you may feel during the laser treatment. Treatment time can take up to an hour and aftercare 15-20 minutes. The skin may feel like a mild sunburn for the remainder of the day, cold compresses are recommended to be applied for a few hours after treatment. Common minimal ‘social downtime’ includes redness and swelling for 2-4 days, bronzed, itching, dry skin may take up to 14 days to completely exfoliate off. We encourage the use of gentle skin care to help speed up recovery.

The initial effect of Fraxel® Dual laser leaves your skin feeling smoother, looking brighter and an improved colour tone. The more delayed effect occurs over the next three to six months as the collagen growth is stimulated.

Fraxel® Dual laser pricing varies depending on the area being treated. Please call the clinic for an initial consultation.
